In 1987, the U.S. Navy became heavily engaged in the Persian Gulf during the Iran–Iraq War, marking one of the most operationally intense periods since Vietnam. The United States launched Operation Earnest Will, in which Navy ships escorted Kuwaiti oil tankers that had been reflagged under the U.S. flag.
